Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to give up your identity, and avoid getting a piercing. Or does it?
The main concern is having the process go wrong and you end up with an infection. As innocuous as it may sound, you just don’t want to do anything that changes your body’s make-up while you’re pregnant. Having to fight off a voluntarily-caused infection is not something your body should have to worry about during this time.
Getting an infection is usually not a huge deal, but since you’re pregnant you are limited to what kind of medication you can take to fight off that infection. This can mean that the infection could worsen, or spread to other areas of your body, causing further complications. This is why it’s not really recommended to get a piercing while you’re pregnant, and why you should wait until you are done breastfeeding to get that new ring or stud.
Can I Get a Piercing While Pregnant? Answer: Not Recommended.
Since the national association for professional piercing establishments says that piercing a pregnant woman is not allowed, it’s enough to pause and reflect on whether this is something you want to go with. If you manage to find a place that will do it, then you’re not dealing with a pro, and issues about cleanliness come up, which only raises the likelihood of getting an infection through the use of improperly sterilized equipment.
So basically, the well-run, clean, and professional places won’t do it for you. They just don’t want to be the ones responsible in case anything goes wrong. There’s too much liability involved. Take the hint and opt not to get yourself pierced until after your baby is finished breastfeeding. You can make it a point to put it on your to-do list for when you’re done, including eating all of the foods you can’t eat while pregnant, or having a drink or a smoke. This is a time to just be one with your baby, and to cut out all of the things that don’t help.
Nose Piercing
A nose piercing seems like it would be harmless enough, since it’s in your nose and away from anywhere the baby is. But the risk of an infection or even an allergic reaction to the metal used in the ring is something you don’t want to take the chance with.
Lip Piercing
A lip piercing is not recommended either. Getting a piercing here is very painful, and some people have been known to go into shock. Even though mouth piercings are known to heal up faster than other locations because they are in the mouth, it’s still not something you want to do while you’re pregnant, and most professional piercing places will not go through with it if you tell them you’re pregnant. That should tell you something.
Navel Piercing
Because of the location of this one, you’re not going to want to get it, and if you already have one, you’ll probably want to take it out. You’re likely well aware that your tummy is going to be getting much bigger than it is now, and you’re stomach area is going to be stretched beyond capacity. It’s not that you risk puncturing the womb or directly hurting your baby, but just for your own safety and well-being, as it’s not going to feel very good to have the piercing stretch along with the rest of your stomach.
You on Hold
So as it turns out, you’ll have to hold off on some of the things you’d normally just go do. If you’re feeling like being pregnant is putting a dent on your ability to be you, you’re right, but you’re also wrong. You just have to embrace your current identity of being a fabulous mom that is doing everything in her baby’s best interest. That’s a pretty good identity to have. It might not shock as many people as a lip or nose piercing would, but it’s something you can feel really good about.
Most moms report that they didn’t mind waiting to get a piercing, and some even said that they changed their mind after waiting for so long.
