Nothing says relax more than going on a cruise. If you’re pregnant it’s good to mitigate your stress levels, and keep that feel good feeling for 9 months or more. The problems that a cruise presents are seasickness, putting yourself into potential danger, insurance coverage issues, and docking at ports that aren’t sanitary.
If you’ve been deemed to have a normal pregnancy, your doctor may give you the green light and tell you bon voyage, but that still doesn’t mean you should go. If you’re been informed that you have a high risk pregnancy, then you should not consider going at all, and stay on terra firma for the duration of your pregnancy.
It’s good to want to be active and do fun things while you’re pregnant, but a cruise ship isn’t really a conducive place for a pregnant woman. You have to put the needs of your baby first, and in this instance a cruise vacation just isn’t in the cards. The risks and reality of the situation far outweigh any benefits you might get from going.
Can I Go on a Cruise While Pregnant? Answer: Not a Great Idea
No matter how you cut it, you probably shouldn’t go on a cruise while you’re pregnant. IF you think about it, you’re going to be restricted from a lot of what goes on on a cruise, namely the drinking. It’s good to get some sun, but you shouldn’t be laying out in the sun for hours on end. When you’re on a cruise ship and can’t drink, and can’t lay out in the sun all day, you’re basically relegated to eating and sitting in the shade. While the ocean air can do a body good, so can a walk in your local park.
Should You Go on a Cruise While Pregnant?
Sometimes if you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should. With so many cruise ships making it into the news these days for capsizing, you might want to put off the idea until your baby is old enough to be baby sat, and then go on a cruise. It’s not as dangerous as skydiving or mountain climbing, but this should be a period of self-preservation, because you are the incubator for your baby, and you want to keep them safe for the full term.
We wish we could tell you, oh sure go on and have a blast, because a cruise is a great experience and a lot of fun. But most of the reason is because you get to drink a lot of alcohol, stuff yourself on amazing buffets, swim in the sun all day, and party all night. The unfortunate bit is that none of this is recommended while you’re pregnant.
A Routine is a Good Thing
By going on a cruise you’re pretty much inviting problems, or inviting a situation where problems could present themselves. The rut that you find yourself in that’s causing you to want to “vacate” your life and go on vacation is actually beneficial to you and your baby. Establishing a routine is a great way to have a safe pregnancy. You get full control over the food you eat, you can easily avoid alcohol, you can play your baby classical music like Mozart and not loud party music they have on cruise ships. You can avoid smokers and smokey places, and you can get regular exercise.
Controlling your environment is key, and when you go on a cruise you lose much of that control. It’s a party atmosphere, there’s alcohol everywhere, there’s rich, decadent food available 24/7 if you’re on an all-inclusive cruise, and you’ll most likely get a small room and small bed unless you’re going the VIP route with a suite.
Plan a Special Post-Pregnancy Trip
After you’re done breastfeeding your baby, plan a special vacation for yourselves to celebrate a successful pregnancy. That way you can take full advantage of the romantic and fun atmosphere of a cruise, without having to refrain from most of the festivities. It’s a much better idea than going on a cruise while pregnant and having to sit out on most activities and think for two when you’re just trying to have fun.

According to Cruise lines, you absolutely CAN go on a cruise while pregnant, but only up until 23 weeks!!! And you shouldn’t be drinking ANYWAYS, let alone while you’re pregnant, and that is not at all a reason to go on a cruise - to drink alot. So I say YES! Before you are 23 weeks it is A-OK!
